Why categories matter this much
When an athlete asks "which category do I compete in?", the answer shapes their entire training year. Colombia uses World Armwrestling Federation classes, the same framework as the world championships.
Eleven men's classes
From up to 55 kg through to over 110 kg, taking in 60, 65, 70, 75, 80, 85, 90, 100 and 110 kg.
Eight women's classes
From up to 50 kg through to over 90 kg: 55, 60, 65, 70, 80 and 90 kg.
Seven age divisions
Sub-Junior (14 and 15), Junior (up to 18), Youth (up to 21), Senior, Masters (over 40), Grand Masters (over 50) and Senior Grand Masters (over 60). There are also divisions for athletes with disabilities.
Two hands, two medals
This is the point that most surprises people arriving from the gym: every weight class and every division awards separate medals for the right and the left hand.
It is not a consolation prize. It is full competition, with its own bracket and its own podium. An athlete who trains only their strong hand is competing for half of what is on offer.
The weigh-in does not forgive
There is no clothing allowance. Weight must register to zero: if your class is 70 kg, the scale has to read 70.0 kg. Not 70.1.
